To recognize ourselves in others we have to look at them, listen to them, understand them. The road is arduous, it has sorrows and joys, and each of them is reflected in their faces and in their actions.

The stories of refugees are told in the first person in the Espejismos webdoc and in the accompanying videos.

Sham Al Asala

Sham Al Asala reminds us the importance of knowing that behind the word refugee there is a lot of suffering. When a person is forced to leave his or her country, he or she does not lose everything he or she has done in life.  We should not hang a label on them and have it represent their whole being and existence.

She and her family were forced to flee even on two occasions in search of security that was impossible to achieve in their place of origin. However, the frustration of being in such a vulnerable situation has never ceased.

Sham Al Asala nos recuerda la importancia de saber que detrás de la palabra refugiado hay mucho sufrimiento. Cuando una persona se ve forzada a salir de su país no pierde todo lo que antes ha hecho en su vida, no debemos colgarle una etiqueta y que eso represente todo su ser y su existencia.

Ella y su familia se vieron en la obligación de escapar hasta en dos ocasiones en busca de una seguridad que era imposible de conseguir en su lugar de origen, sin embargo, la frustración por encontrarse ante una situación tan vulnerable nunca ha cesado.

Ayam

Problems such as sectarianism affected many people, including Ayam. This forced her to leave her homeland… to emigrate and while escaping the bad situation in one country she found horror in a relationship. She found herself a refugee and an abused woman, but her strength enabled her to leave and become a confident, self-reliant person.

Problemas como el sectarismo afectaron a muchísimas personas, entre ellas a Ayam. Esto le hizo tener que huir de su país, abandonar su tierra… emigrar y mientras escapaba de la mala situación de un país encontró el horror en una relación. Se encontró siendo refugiada y, además, mujer maltratada. Pero su fortaleza le permitió salir de ahí y convertirse en una persona segura y autónoma.

Lynx Muhumadu

Because of her mother’s illness, Lynx Muhamadu was eventually sold to a man. Because of his abuse, she decided to flee to Spain and despite the initial difficulties, she has managed to rebuild her life and gradually move on and come to terms with her past.

A causa de la enfermedad de su madre, Lynx Muhamadu acabó siendo vendida a un hombre. Por culpa de sus malos tratos, ella decidió huir a España y a pesar de las primeras dificultade, ha conseguido rehacer su vida y poco a poco avanzar y aceptar su pasado.

Karim

The story of how Karim came to Spain will leave you speechless. He had to leave his country to save his life. His problems with a high-ranking army officer because of a forbidden and frowned-upon love affair with his daughter forced him to leave his home and everyone around him.

La historia de cómo Karim llegó a España te dejará sin palabras. Tuvo que abandonar su país para salvar su vida. Sus problemas con un alto cargo del ejército por causa de un amor prohibido y mal visto con su hija, le obligaron a abandonar su casa y a todos los que le rodeaban.

Fabiola Ticas

Second chances can help tons. This is the story of Fabiola Ticas, for whom being able to arrive in a new place and start from scratch was her salvation. She came escaping from a hostile environment where her true identity was not respected, and here she found her true vocation; helping and empowering others.

Las segundas oportunidades pueden ayudar, y mucho. Esto nos lo cuenta Fabiola Ticas, para la que poder llegar a un lugar nuevo y empezar de cero fue su salvación. Vino escapando de un entorno hostil que no respetaban su verdadera identidad y aquí encontró su verdadera vocación. Ayudar y empoderar a los demás.

Fabiana Hernandez

Fabiana Hernández, despite giving her life to others, defending, and advising LGTBI people and people with HIV, was forced to flee her house, her home, due to pressure from people who did not like her work.

Fabiana Hernández, a pesar de entregar su vida a los demás, defendiendo y asesorando a personas LGTBI y personas con VIH, se vio obligada a escapar de su casa, de su hogar, por presiones de personas a las que no les gustaba su labor.

Daniela Montes

Daniela Montes talks about the prejudices and stereotypes that exist about refugees and the differences with other types of migratory movements. She also explains everything that lies behind these processes and the lack of empathy that is sometimes shown towards people who find themselves in this situation.

Daniela Montes habla de los prejuicios y estereotipos que se realizan sobre las personas refugiadas y las diferencias con otros tipos de movimientos migratorios. Explica también todo el proceso que hay detrás de estos procesos y la poca empatía que en ocasiones que se muestra hacia personas que se encuentran en esta situación.

Sadly, the harassment that Álex Medina received because of his sexual orientation made him flee his country. After his arrival in Spain, and despite the difficulties, Ahmed managed to get ahead and live without fear of expressing himself as he truly is.

Tristemente, el acoso que recibía Álex Medina a causa de su orientación sexual le hicieron escapar de su país. A raíz de su llegada a España, y a pesar de las dificultades Ahmed consiguió salir adelante y vivir sin miedo de ser como verdaderamente es.

PAREM

PAREM stands for “Asociación Para la Ayuda a Personas Refugiadas en Murcia”. They try to help all people who find themselves in this situation and are concerned about their inclusion and integration.

PAREM son las siglas de la Asociación Para la Ayuda a Personas Refugiadas en Murcia. Las personas que la conforman tratan de ayudar a todas las personas que se encuentran en esta situación y se preocupan por su inclusión e integración.

Hafedh Trifi

Hafedh Trifi suffered threats and pressure from high officials in his country. Despite having a good socio-economic status there, his activism in favour of LGTBI rights, of which he is a member, made him escape and seek international asylum.

Hafedh Trifi sufría amenazas y presiones por parte de altos cargos en su país. A pesar de tener un buen estatus socioeconómico allí, su activismo a favor de los derechos LGTBI, colectivo del que él mismo forma parte le hizo escapar y buscar asilo internacional.

Dijby Mbaye

When he was almost a child, Dijby Mbaye left his country in search of a better life and a better future. Once he achieved his goal, he did not hesitate for a second to give his life to help other children or even adults in the same situation.

Siendo casi un niño Dijby Mbaye se fue de su país en busca de una vida y un futuro mejor. Y una vez consiguió su propósito no dudó ni un segundo en querer entregar su vida a ayudar a otros niños o incluso adultos que se encontraban en su misma situación.

Edgardo Pinell

Edgardo Pinell is a reporter who never hesitated to be honest and tell the truth about his country through the media. However, his closest family, fearing that something bad could happen to him, suggested that he should leave the country. Worried for his family, he listened to them and is now safe.

Edgardo Pinell es un reportero que nunca dudó en ser sincero y contar verdades de su país a través de los medios de comunicación, sin embargo su familia más cercana, con miedo a que algo malo pudiese ocurrirle le sugirieron irse del país. Él preocupado por los suyos les hizo caso y huyó del país.
