Reshaping Attention and Inclusion Strategies for Distinctively vulnerable people among the forcibly displaced

Forced displacement crises affect societies and institutions all over the world. Pushed by the urgencies rather than proper planning, solutions are frequently reactive, partial, and disregardful of some groups.

The RAISD project aims at discovering highly Vulnerable Groups among these forcibly displaced persons, analysing their specific challenges and needs regarding integration and well-being, and finally identify suitable practices to improve their inclusion in host societies through tailored attention and inclusion strategies (TAISs) within a specific vulnerability context.

The concept of vulnerability context considers the interplay between the features of these persons and their hosting communities, their interactions and experiences, and how different solutions for attention and inclusion affect them.

Migration and vulnerability factors

The treatment of phenomena related to vulnerable groups among these forcibly displaced people requires an understanding of the context where they occur.

This context features three key components: first, the people of the vulnerable groups, with their vital trajectories, contexts of departure, and individual vicissitudes; second, the host environments and their societies, with their history, culture, socio-economic systems, civil society, and attitudes towards forcibly displaced people and vulnerable groups. Third, the interactions between the aforementioned elements.

Strategies for migrant reception and settlement policies

Usually there is some misinformation about such a complex and heterogeneous migration landscape, since the specific conditions of distinctively vulnerable groups (i.e. women, children, and people with disabilities) are often overlooked. This lack of understanding hinders the potential benefits of attending, receiving, and helping migrants through their settling process.

RAISD developed innovative tailored attention and inclusion practices (TAIS) to define effective practices in a given context, describing the correspondence among vulnerability factors, implemented practices, and evaluation criteria. Such correspondence (or mapping) will define and characterise the TAISs in terms of: target group, objectives, requirements, type of host community, actual results, related artefacts and evaluation by actors.

A more equitable and sustainable society through research

In order to test the effectiveness of tailored attention and inclusion practices, RAISD created multidisciplinary groups set up in each partner city and scattered throughout Central-Eastern (Hungary), Southern (Spain and Italy) and Northern (Finland) parts of Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia (Turkey) and the Middle East (Jordan, Lebanon). Action Research Units (ARU) are the key drivers of research work and the main sources of information.

ARUs are responsible for gathering information concerning migrants and their living conditions, as well as related institutions and societal actors so as to define a novel concept of vulnerability context.

Monitoring inclusion measures for vulnerable migrants

RAISD applies an innovative methodological triangulation which combines Responsible Research & Innovation, action research and a socio-ecological model approach to monitor inclusion measures for vulnerable migrants and develop innovative standard methods: A Collaborative Research and Innovation Online tool (CRIOS).

The state-of-the-art platform integrates information and knowledge sharing tools developed by different actors involved in the research project, and free analysis software using open standards and protocols to facilitate interoperability.

Shaping the Mediterranean from Cooperation to Integration

RAISD at the UNIMED General Assembly

This year the UNIMED General Assembly will be held in Rome, at the Link Campus University on 12th and 13th December 2019, and will be  organised by UNIMED, one of RAISD partner organisations, in collaboration with the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) in Jounieh, Lebanon. It represents an important opportunity to introduce the RAISD project to the Assembly audience as well as by presenting it during the session Academic cooperation through capacity building and research: opportunities and examples. 

By means of this workshop the Euro-Mediterranean academic community seeks to reflect on the relationships between the European Union, international institutions and the Mediterranean region, offering an opportunity for assessing and rethinking regional policies. The event will be a great occasion for meeting different stakeholders  such as universities and other international organizations and NGOs, government officials, students, influential personalities in the academic and political circles, raising awareness about strategic views on Forced Displacement in the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation area.
